More Than an After-School Activity: What Makes Lincoln Family Martial Arts Different

When parents look for an activity for their child, there are plenty of options. Sports, dance, music, clubs, and martial arts can all give children opportunities to have fun, stay active, and make friends.

But there is another question worth asking:

What is my child gaining from the time they spend there?

At Lincoln Family Martial Arts Academy, we believe martial arts should be about much more than keeping children busy for an hour.

Our students absolutely have fun. They train, laugh, challenge themselves, and build friendships. But behind all of that is a much bigger purpose: helping children develop the skills, confidence, and character they need to succeed in life.

Martial Arts With a Bigger Purpose

A child may come to class to learn a new kick, form, or sparring technique. But while they are learning martial arts, they are also learning how to listen, focus, handle frustration, work with others, accept correction, and keep going when something is difficult.

These are skills that don’t disappear when class ends.

They can help a child in the classroom, at home, with friends, and eventually in college, careers, and relationships.

That’s why our instructors don’t simply ask, “Can this student perform the technique?”

We also look at questions like:

  • Is this student becoming more confident?
  • Are they learning to handle challenges?
  • Can they control their emotions when frustrated?
  • Are they becoming more responsible?
  • Are they learning to work well with others?
  • Are they beginning to show leadership?

The martial arts technique is important, but the person developing behind the technique is what matters most.

Developing the Whole Child

Children develop in many different ways, not just physically.

Our programs are designed to support physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development through age-appropriate training and instruction.

Students build coordination, balance, agility, strength, and body awareness.

They also have to think, remember techniques, solve problems, respond to instructions, and adapt when something doesn’t go as planned.

Just as importantly, they learn how to deal with frustration, mistakes, disappointment, and challenges.

Our instructors use these moments as opportunities for growth rather than simply trying to eliminate every difficult experience.

As we discussed in our article Turning Big Emotions into Teachable Moments,” challenging emotional moments can become valuable opportunities to help children develop self-control and emotional awareness.

The Program Grows With the Student

A three-year-old doesn’t learn the same way as a ten-year-old, and a teenager has very different needs from a preschooler.

That’s why Lincoln Family Martial Arts offers age-specific programs designed around the developmental needs of each stage.

Our Early Tigers program for ages 3 to 4 focuses on foundational movement, listening, confidence, social interaction, and early self-control.

Our Basic Tigers program for ages 5 to 6 begins developing greater independence, focus, cooperation, and discipline.

As students progress into our youth and teen programs, they take on more challenging training and greater responsibility while continuing to develop confidence, resilience, leadership, and self-discipline.

The goal isn’t simply to make the techniques harder as students get older.

The goal is to help the student grow as the student grows.

Learning to Handle Challenges

One of the most valuable lessons martial arts can teach is that struggling doesn’t mean you should quit.

A student might have difficulty learning a technique. They might make a mistake in front of their classmates. They might lose a game or become frustrated because someone else is progressing faster.

Those moments can be uncomfortable, but they can also become some of the most important moments in a student’s development.

Our instructors help students work through challenges instead of immediately giving up.

Over time, they begin to discover:

“I can do difficult things.”

That experience creates genuine confidence.

It’s also why we believe confidence isn’t something a child simply receives from being told, “You’re great.” Confidence grows when children face challenges, work through them, and experience their own progress.

We explore this idea further in “Overcoming Beginner’s Doubt: Embracing the Martial Arts Journey.”

Traditional Martial Arts With Practical Skills

Our focus on development doesn’t mean we have moved away from traditional martial arts.

Traditional Taekwondo is at the heart of our training.

Students learn forms, sparring, traditional techniques, discipline, respect, and the values that have been passed down through generations of martial artists.

At the same time, our training goes beyond sport.

We incorporate practical self-defense and combative concepts inspired by multiple martial arts disciplines. Students can develop a broader understanding of personal protection, including standing defense, ground-defense fundamentals, and real-world awareness.

We respect and study techniques from different martial arts systems, but our goal isn’t to chase trends or focus exclusively on competition.

We want students to have a well-rounded foundation that combines traditional martial arts values with practical skills.

From Student to Leader

As students mature, their role in the academy can change too.

A younger student may begin by learning how to follow directions and participate appropriately.

As they grow, they can begin taking greater responsibility, helping classmates, demonstrating techniques, and becoming positive examples for younger students.

This gives them an opportunity to practice leadership rather than simply hearing about it.

Leadership isn’t about being the loudest person in the room.

It’s about responsibility, communication, confidence, service, and setting a positive example.

We’ve explored this in greater depth in “Martial Arts Builds Leadership Skills.”

The Goal Goes Beyond the Belt

At Lincoln Family Martial Arts Academy, we are proud of the martial artists our students become.

But we are even more interested in the people they become along the way.

We want our students to become young people who can face challenges without immediately giving up.

People who can manage frustration.

People who can work with others.

People who can accept feedback and learn from mistakes.

People who can lead with confidence and treat others with respect.

People who understand that meaningful success comes from consistent effort.

Martial arts is the vehicle we use to help students develop these qualities.

The belt is something they earn along the way.

The person they become is what matters most.
